Calligraphy for Beginners: Creating Strong Lines Course Description
This class is a project-based introduction to my favorite calligraphy tool, the Pilot Parallel Pen. The Pilot Parallel Pen is a popular wide-edge pen that is often featured in YouTube videos. In this class, you will guide students through exercises that teach the development of pen angles and rhythms, and create a series of marks that you can use to create your own projects. A close-up video will be used to demonstrate working with a pen, using only the ink and recommended paper that came with the pen, to address the main challenges faced by beginner calligraphers. Carefully designed worksheets allow you to see and practice at your convenience.
The project is to design tattoos (or decorative designs). Learners are encouraged to create their own designs and are given four design approaches to use in tattoo design. Body ink is completely optional!
This class is designed for beginner calligraphers, but does the work of illustrators, designers, typologists, tattoo artists, watercolor painters, etc. who are not afraid to apply a small amount of water-based ink to their fingers. I will teach you the skills that you can strengthen. I'm focusing on pilot parallel pens, but many of the classes can be applied to any wide calligraphy pen. Note: This class is the first class in the trilogy.
I separated working with colored inks in two fun calligraphy classes in addition to (1) pen skills and (2) more advanced pen skills as a prelude to learning Gothic writing. I have created two classes to teach. My approach is to get very familiar with the tools and master the skills with both pen and ink before paying attention to the more serious work of letter forms. The goal is to lead to the success of calligraphy step by step!
